FMWC AWARDS
The May Cohen Award is awarded annually to the FMWC member that best personifies the legacy of May Cohen and her unique ability to transfer the FMWC vision into living action in support of women physicians and women's health. When deciding among nominees, preference will be given to candidates who have been FMWC members in the year prior. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 2013.
The Enid Johnson MacLeod Award recognizes either a physician or non-physician for the promotion of women’s health research and/or women’s health education. This award was established to honour Dr. Enid MacLeod, a long-time member of the Federation from Nova Scotia. Dr MacLeod was known for her research into the use of curare for anaesthesia and remembered for her generosity and warmth of spirit. When deciding among nominees, preference will be given to candidates who have been FMWC members in the year prior. Nominations are open until December 31, 2013.
The Reproductive Health Award is given annually in recognition of a FMWC full member seen to contribute the most to reproductive health. Nominations require submission of a completed nomination form and c.v./resume of the nominee. When deciding among nominees, preference will be given to candidates who have been FMWC members in the year prior. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 2013.
Honorary Member is given annually to usually a non-member of the FMWC, to a woman who has rendered outstanding service to one or more of the following: the Federation of Medical Women (FMWC), to medicine and particularly to women’s health issues.
The Student Leadership Award is given annually to recognize the FMWC medical student member showing the most potential in the realm of leadership. Particular interest is given to candidates who demonstrate leadership in support of the FMWC mission statement. When deciding among nominees, preference will be given to candidates who have been FMWC members in the year prior. The deadline for nominations is: December 31, 2013.
The Jessie McGeachy Award is presented every year to the woman graduating medical school at University of Saskatchewan with the best academic standing. The award was established in 1968 in honour of Dr. Jessie McGeachy, wife of the second Dean of Medicine, Dr. Wendell MacLeod.
The Dr. Shelagh Lindsay Medical Award is a University of Calgary faculty nominated award, developed in 2008, and is offered annually to a student completing the final year in the Faculty of Medicine MD program. To be eligible candidates must be accepted into a family medicine residency training program in Alberta from the Canadian Resident Matching Service. Preference will be given to a student who is a member of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada. The Maude Abbott Grant Fund was established in 1939. This fund was originally a loan fund but is now a grant. Grants are available to female medical students who are FMWC members. The grant applications are available online. When deciding among applicants, preference will be given to candidates who have been FMWC members in the year prior.
