May Cohen Award

The May Cohen Award is presented annually to a longstanding full member of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) who best personifies the legacy of Dr. May Cohen and her unique ability to transfer the vision of the FMWC into living action in support of women physicians and women's health.

Who is May Cohen?

“You have to be prepared to stand up and fight”. This statement from Dr. Cohen, exemplifies her character and stance.  Dr. Cohen is a clinician, educator, advocate, leader and socially progressive woman and physician.  She had and has no difficulty speaking to power.  She did so with passion, commitment and energy around the issues of importance to women’s health and physicians.   She was constantly learning about women’s health.  She is continuously thinking of gender medicine – how gender impacts work, study, and living.  She worked tirelessly for women’s reproductive rights, women’s health and women physicians’ advancement.

Individuals nominated for this award need to demonstrate this stance; demonstrate experiences and actions taken to move this movement forward – advance action in supporting women’s reproductive rights, women’s health and women physician’s issues.  In doing so this individual is impacting all genders.  In particular, the individual needs to demonstrate a knowledge of gender and how this impacts on health and be an advocate and leader in this direction.
