Dr. Stephanie Smith

Dr (Captain) Stephanie Smith is a military medical officer recently posted back to her hometown of Oromocto, NB. She initially joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2001 while completing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of New Brunswick, and then had the opportunity to deploy twice to Afghanistan and once with the Disaster Assistance Response Team to the Philippines in response to typhoon Haiyan. She attended medical school and completed a family medicine residency at the Cumming School of Medicine in Calgary, AB in 2021. Throughout her training, she was actively involved in leadership roles as the medical student representative on the Alberta Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and resident representative on the Canadian Medical Protective Association boards. Additionally, she served as President of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students board and Treasurer of the Resident Doctors of Canada board. She has completed a master’s degree in Disaster and Emergency Management at Royal Roads University and was actively involved with pandemic response and developed of the Pandemic Response Unit in Calgary, AB. She is presently an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary and has been actively involved in developing the resiliency curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees. She welcomed her first child, Shaeleigh Annabella in September and is enjoying motherhood.
