The Federation of Medical Women of Canada is pleased to announce their inaugural Gender, Equity and Diversity Medical Student Essay Contest.
Women are poised to make up 50% of practicing physicians in Canada by 2030. This is a significant achievement considering that women had to fight for entry into medical school just 150 years ago. In the years since, Canadian women have demonstrated perseverance in following their dreams of practicing medicine or devoting their careers to scientific discovery and promoting advances in health care. Despite the gain in numbers, women physicians continue to face challenges in accessing equal opportunities in research, academic and clinical environments. Gender stereotypes continue to influence career advice with women discouraged to pursue certain specialities in favour of others more suited to “their nature”.
Women are a “disruptive force” in medicine, challenging old ways of doing things and introducing different models of practice and ways of being a physician in Canada. We celebrate our collective disruption for a more complete profession and, ultimately, better patient care.
Topics – pick only one!
• Tell us about any aspect of the positive impacts of the increasing role of women in medicine.
• Tell us about a time when you faced adversity and/or have shown resilience as a woman in medicine.
