FMWC Statement on Access to Medical Abortion Care

The Federation of Medical Women of Canada is a national organization committed to the professional, social and personal advancement of women physicians and to the promotion of the well-being of women both in the medical profession and society at large.  We continue to affirm that women have the right to choose their own medical care, including abortion and support full access to this procedure – both medical and surgical.

We were disappointed to read of the ongoing media coverage regarding the challenges and confusion women face throughout Canada in securing a medical abortion through the prescribing of Mifegymiso. We support the ongoing work by advocates and physicians alike to ensure that abortion is fully accessible to anyone seeking this procedure, regardless of geography.

We encourage our fellow health care providers to register as prescribers, and access training available either through the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, or the National Abortion Federation.  We further encourage healthcare providers who support full access to abortion to undertake this training to enhance their knowledge, skills, and confidence.
